Death can inspire some important conversations about life. And when we're thinking about how to live without regrets, thoughts around how we're spending our time and our money open come up.

To explore this topic further, I've invited Hospice Doctor and Author, Jordan Grumet on the podcast today.

Jordan (aka Doc G) is a physician who discovered financial independence on the cusp of job burnout. He is currently an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice, where he supports patients in their final days of living.

Overview: How to Live Without Regrets with Jordan Grumet

Jordan Grumet reviews the following:

  • Why it's important to evaluate how we're spending our time and money
  • How to ride the balance between the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) and YOLO (You Only Live Once) Movements
  • The importance of finding purpose, identity and connection

Key Takeaways on How to Live Without Regrets

Here are my top three takeaways from my conversation with Jordan Grumet.

We Don’t Know When We'll Die

I struggle with this balance of hard-charging toward Financial Independence and enjoying life today as is shared in the book, Die With Zero … because I don’t know when I’ll die.

I don’t want to die with a pile of money and miss out on great times with my family.

But I also want to provide for my family and ensure we’re all set for a long life together. That is if I’m lucky to have one.

Like anything, this is a delicate balance of how much to save and how much to enjoy.

I wish I could tell you the exact percentage, but I TRULY believe that is personal.

Focus on Purpose, Identity and Connection

Jordan’s continual reminder for us to focus on purpose, identity and connection is … purposeful!

In order to find that personal balance between FIRE and YOLO, we need to understand what our purpose is.

And our identity:

  • Who am I?
  • Who do I want to be?
  • What do I want to move towards?

And connection:

  • Who do I want to be with more?
  • Who do I feel most connected to?

By using those pillars, we can find our FIRE vs YOLO balance much easier.

Start by Removing the Friction in your Life

Crafting your ideal life becomes a lot easier when you remove the stuff that doesn't matter. I remember this quite well from our chat with Joshua Becker

The removal of things that don't matter can be physical things like clutter around the house. Or commitments that are blocking our ability to enjoy more life today. In the case of personal finance, we can remove expenses that aren’t helping us get where we want to go.

Let's start off by slowly removing the things from our lives that aren’t serving us.

This “time, money and stuff decluttering activity” can reduce friction and move us toward that regret-free life we’re all seeking.
