Learning how to manage money as a couple is one of the biggest hurdles you’ll face. A study by TD Bank found that nearly 80% of couples disagree about money at least once per month.

Once a month! That’s 12 fights a year you could avoid by learning to manage money better as a couple.

That’s where the Zeta can help! It’s a joint bank account designed to keep you on the same page in a more modern way. Keep reading this Zeta review to find out if it’s right for you and your partner.

Zeta Review: What is Zeta?

If you manage your finances on your own, you probably don't need to think twice about which bank account you open. (Unless, of course, you still haven't opened a high-yield savings account. Don't sleep on that!) But if you manage your finances with a partner, a joint account can be really beneficial. It's true that many banks offer joint bank accounts, but Zeta is different.

Zeta caters to modern couples.

How Does Zeta Work?

Getting started with Zeta is simple!

Step 1

Tell Zeta a little about yourself and your relationship.

Step 2

Invite your partner to join Zeta. At this point, Zeta allows them to confirm their information.

Step 3

Check for your Zeta card. Both you and your partner will receive cards so you can save and spend together.

Step 4

Use the different Zeta features–such as in-app messaging, goals, and bills reserve–to hit your money goals together!

Best Features of Zeta

Zeta Review - Joint Accounts for Modern Couples

Let's be honest. There's no shortage of bank account options in the world. But there are some things about Zeta that really stand out.

Here are some of the best features of Zeta that show how it's really been designed for couples who want to win when it comes to their finances.

Avoid fees

No Zeta review would be complete without sharing this: Zeta is free to use! There are no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements. In fact, here is a list of all the fees that you dodge when you use Zeta.

At Zeta, there are no fees for…

  • Opening an account
  • Maintaining an account
  • Having an inactive account
  • Replacing a lost card
  • Using an in-network Allpoint ATM

Zeta does charge an out-of-network ATM fee, as well as foreign transaction fees, outgoing wire fees, and returned item charges. Prices are in line with other financial institutions or even lower!

Set Goals

Saving and budgeting can feel restrictive. Unless you remember that these tools pave the pathway to your goals. Zeta gets how important goal setting is in relationships. That's why they added a Goals feature to their joint bank accounts.

You can use the Zeta app to add a goal. These goals likely align with different parts of your financial plan. Maybe you want to beef up your emergency fund. Maybe you're dreaming about a vacation or a home renovation or another sinking fund of some sort. Whatever the goal, you can create it with Zeta.

After you add the goal, give it a name, set a target date, and enter a target amount.

As an added bonus, if you enter all of that information into your goal, Zeta will automatically generate a savings plan for you.

You can work on your goal alone or you can also have your partner contribute to it. Goals are funded through one-time transfers or their auto-save program.

Build a bill calendar

Have you ever missed a due date? I have, and it’s no fun. Usually, companies are quick to add a late payment fee for a missed payment. But it’s my fault for not keeping a closer eye on the calendar.

Luckily, Zeta has an in-app bill calendar. When you first set up your account, the app will analyze your recent transactions and suggest bills to add to the calendar. This saves a lot of time and hassle. Instead of going through your paperwork or sifting through your account, Zeta does all the work for you.

When you set up your account, it automatically adds your monthly Netflix payments, Verizon phone bills, student loan payments, and internet service.

It might not catch all of them, so you may have to add some yourself. But once the bills and due dates are added, you can see them all in one place.

The app also lets you set push notifications for your smartphone, texts, and emails to remind you about upcoming due dates.

In addition to calendaring your due dates, Zeta even goes so far as to set aside funds for those bills. Talk about peace of mind!

Use in-app communication

When you share bank accounts, you don’t always know what the other person is spending money on. You might see a transaction you don’t recognize. Instead of opening a separate messaging app, sending a text, or picking up the phone, why not send a message straight from Zeta itself?

With Zeta, you can. The app is meant for couples. And couples need to communicate about their finances.

The memo feature inside the Zeta app lets you add notes to transactions, so you and your partner are always on the same page when it comes to your spending.

If you picked up a gift card for your daughter’s swim coach, you could add a memo like, “thank you gift for the swim coach.” Or, if your partner stopped on the way home from work to buy a few groceries, they could add a note in the app to keep you in the loop with your budget.

Get support

Once you have a Zeta Joint Cards account, you'll notice a really neat feature called Zeta Concierge. The name fits because you get a dedicated Zeta staff member assigned to your account whose job is to make your Zeta experience remarkable.

Initially, they will help with account setup and make sure that you understand the different features of your Zeta account. They will also reach out to you over time to share information about other products and services that you might want to take advantage of.

There is no cost to use Zeta Concierge. While Zeta Concierge may occasionally recommend a paid feature, you'll never be automatically opted into anything. After all, the Zeta Concierge's number one goal is to make sure users are satisfied with the banking product!

Add account members

Zeta knows that families tend to expand! If and when your family grows, Zeta wants your account to be able to grow with it. Since this is an upcoming feature, we haven't actually had a chance to test it out. But Zeta says that you will be able to add three different types of people:

  • Additional account owners
  • Companions with credit limits
  • Kids

And another way that Zeta is growing with its client base is to also plan to launch individual accounts. They realize that many modern couples combine some of their finances while leaving other accounts separate. Soon, you'll be able to have both account options with Zeta.

Where Zeta Falls Short

Zeta is relatively new, so new features are still being developed. Setting up the app is straightforward, but it isn’t perfect. Thankfully, you can connect with customer support fairly easily and they are building out more helpful resources and features on their website.

The app also falls short with tracking progress toward your savings goals and your overall financial picture. Since Zeta sunset its money manager features, users may find themselves looking at other apps like Monarch Money to get an overall picture of their financial situation.

Who Should Use Zeta?

Money is stressful enough. Trying to manage finances in a relationship isn’t easy, but Zeta can help.

It’s an excellent tool that can open up communication about money. Zeta can also keep you and your partner accountable for your savings goals.

While Zeta may not offer the most competitive interest rate, its rates are leaps and bounds ahead of any brick-and-mortar bank. We are also excited about the features that Zeta plans to roll out to allow for additional family members and individual accounts.

Whether you share all of your finances and bank accounts or only part of your finances are combined, consider a Zeta joint account for money management. The app can track shared goals while still letting you keep your financial life separate from your partner.

And if you're looking to keep you and your partner on the same page with a budget, you can also check out one of the best budgeting apps to help with your finances.

Zeta Review: The Bottom Line

Most relationships have a spender and a saver. There’s likely been a time when you didn’t see eye to eye about your finances. That’s where Zeta comes in.

Zeta is a joint account for modern couples who want to get on the same page with their money…and stay there. Check out Zeta today for free and see what you think about it!
